OPST Commando Tips 10 Foot – Skagit Sink Tips for Depth Control

OPST Commando Tips – 10ft Skagit Tips for Steelhead & Salmon

Fish Smarter. Swing Deeper. Stay in the Zone.

Depth control is the difference between a fly that swings through empty water and one that crosses the nose of a holding fish. The OPST Commando Tips – 10 Foot series is engineered to give you precise, adaptable control over your presentation when swinging flies for steelhead, salmon, and large trout.

Designed to pair seamlessly with Skagit-style heads, these tips allow you to fine-tune sink rate and depth based on current speed, water column structure, and seasonal conditions. Not every run calls for a heavy, fast-sinking tip. Sometimes fish slide shallow in higher flows or transitional seasons—this is where balanced sink profiles make all the difference.

Dialed Sink Rates for Riffle, Run, and Bucket

Within each grain class, OPST offers three calibrated sink rates, allowing anglers to adjust to water type without changing their entire system. Whether you’re fishing a gentle tailout or a deep bucket, there’s a purpose-built tip for the job.

Choose Your Water Column

The 10-foot length offers a versatile blend of turnover and sink profile, maintaining smooth energy transfer while achieving effective depth control.

Balanced Performance for Modern Skagit Systems

Commando Tips are specifically engineered to maintain proper grain matching with modern Skagit heads. The result is efficient casting, tight loops, and predictable swing arcs. By selecting the correct grain weight and sink rate combination, you can maintain fly speed and depth through every stage of the drift.

When fish adjust their holding water, your system should adapt just as quickly. With OPST Commando Tips, depth is never a guess—it’s intentional.

Spey rods are made for rivers or at least moving water. (Ie tidal movement). I took my 4 wt 1111-4 IMX-Pro combined with an Danielsson Original 2W reel out on a skiff in San Diego Bay, CA and worked the tidal movement. First time in a boat of any kind with the Skagit set up. I had an intermediate OPST head combined with the 10 ft sink tip. Took a bit but the casting from the skiff worked fine. I was able to get some nice swings from the boat. The fishing was a bit slow but I was able to hook up to some Spotted Bay Bass. I initially was using a Gunnar Brammer swing baitfish pattern (this streamer looks absolutely sick swinging in the water) but got no action as it is weightless. I was hoping for a shortfin corvina. Went to a weighted Red Rabbit pattern by Ryan Favorite which just kills the Spotties and started to get action. The combination of the intermediate head and 10’ sink tip worked great. I wasn’t sure the short tip would get me down deep enough but no problem getting to the right depths. I got blasted by a San Diego Bay bonefish (YES we have bonefish in San Diego California) and had a good fight. Got the bone to the skiff and lost it right at the boat. The head/tip combo worked great. Casted great and fished flawlessly. I recommend OPST tips to anybody interested in Skagit setups.
